Improving research ethics and scientific publishing: ICHR and Hue UMP establishing cooperation with Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya.On the 23rd and 24th of April, 2015, according to the activity plan of ICHR, the delegation of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue UMP), Vietnam, led by Professor Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy, Vice-Rector of Hue UMP paid an official working visit to the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Malaysia. The delegation from Hue UMP also included A/Prof Vo Van Thang and Professor Michael Dunne, Co-Directors of ICHR, A/prof Hoang Bui Bao, Head of Graduate Department and Dr Ha Chan Nhan, Vice-head of Department of Scientific research, International Relation, Training and Steering, Hue UMP’s Hospital.
The purpose of the working visit was to promote bilateral cooperation between the two universities and ICHR, share experiences in implementing scientific research, carrying out activities of the Research Ethics Committee in biomedicine and publishing scientific journals in medicine.
The University of Malaya is the largest multidisciplinary university in Malaysia and is a relatively high ranked one in the South -Eastern Asia and in the world. According to the QS university ranking, the University of Malaya is currently ranked 32nd in Asia and is ranked 151st in the world. The Faculty of Medicine is one of the strongest faculties of the University, particularly in the field of scientific research.
In the first morning of the working visit, the discussion focused on the activities of the Ethics Committee in Biomedicine Research. Professor Looi Lai-Meng, President of the Ethics Committee in Medicine of the University of Malaya’s Hospital, shared his practical experiences in the role and importance of the Committee as well as the achievements and challenges of the Committee in its operation. In the afternoon session, the delegation of the Hue UMP exchanged ideas on the activities of the Hue UMP’s Journal of Medicine and Pharmacy with Editorial Board of Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health, which is a prestige journal in the field of public health research in Asia –Pacific region. The experiences in the operational procedures of the journal has been shared from the University of Malaya, especially in the application of information technology to its online management, which was one of the most interest of Hue UMP’s delegation. In the next working day, Hue UMP’s delegation had a meeting with Professor Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman, Vice-Director of Malaya University and Professor Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Dean of Faculty of Medicine. Following the meeting, the two universities agreed to proceed to a cooperation commitment in many areas and will soon proceed to sign their MoU. In the same day, the delegation also visited the Centre for Research and Training on Tropical diseases.
Ending of the visit, A/professor Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy has invited the leadership of the University of Malaya, the Medical Faculty and the scientists of the University of Malaya to have an official visit to Hue UMP to continue working and sharing experiences in the operation of the Research Ethics Committee and scientific publishing activities of the university’s medical journal in the near future.
